Katy French has died.

Katy French, the 24 year old Irish model died earlier this evening in Navan Hospital. Gardai have just today launched an investigation into the cause of her death. She had collapsed at a house party on Sunday night and hadn't regained consciousness
Let the Independent commence with the hand wringing and blaming. Who will they blame first? What twaddle and spin can they release?
What a horrible start to the Christmas holiday. Her poor parents. I may not have thought much of their daughter, but I feel nothing but sympathy for them and the rest of her family.
RIP Katy.

Death is awful. Brutally, truly awful. I don't know why, but somehow my simple brain thinks a death around Christmas is always somehow a little bit worse.

Blogger Sweary said...

Oh well. Add another one to the list.

I suppose it's all the more tragic because she knew Glenda Gilson and frequently got her kit off. Here go the headlines... "Tragic Katy this, tragic Katy that, evil dealer this, thug pusher that."

I'm just going on the front page of the Sun I found at work, mind.

I feel horrible for her family. What a thing to face up to coming up to Christmas. And if, like the headlines suggest, this really was her own doing, then it makes me angry even more than it makes me sad.

... and if it WAS a coke overdose, shame on those fucking cunts at that party who reportedly put her to bed instead of attempting to keep her awake while waiting for medical help. Guess they needed their time to clean up the evidence and scarper.

SL, Spot on.
As an aside, the Indo was doing a drum beat earlier, crowing that Beaut.ie was down, sort of 'suggesting' it was because of negative comments surrounding this case. Now I don't know why beaut is down, but I doubt it's for any other reason other than a technical one. Let's the tide of tabloid salacious stories commence.

By the way, should they not have been disowning her completely after her drugs revelations? I thought they were completely good and caring and thoughful and conservative and right-thinking people?

We'll get the 'who amongst us hasn't blah blah blah' before they get stuck right into bloggers and online critics whose harsh words practically forced the stuff up her nose.

Sad for her family, 24 is no age at all.

The only positive I can see is it might force Barry Egan over the edge.

Doesn't even much matter what the cause was. for some reason even though I didnt know her i feel deeply saddened by the death of Katy, Cocaine has become such a normal (I use that term losely) part of the social scene in dublin, that id be hard pressed to find someone who hasnt at least been offered the drug on a night out. Thankfully many have the strength & knowledge to refuse, however for a 19 yr old starting out in a new career (katy said she was this age when she started using cocaine) I can understand her need to fit in with 'The Norm'..

It really is a tradgedy & I for one will miss her bright smile in our newsapapers, with some views I may disagree with, I have to admit she was honest & staright forward!

Thoughts & prayers with her & her family x x

Blogger fatmammycat said...

I'm going to bed now, but in answer to some questions, I and most of the people here feel badly for Katy's family, and if that is not apparent then I can't hep you. If you seek offense you will find it.

As for the lads in Waterford, that too was a terrible shame, especially seeing as one poor chap had just survived cancer.
They were not public figures, and although this does not lesson the grief and pain to their families, it does lessen the 'media' interest and by extension, the publics.
Most of us-by the time we reach a certain age- have taken some stupid risk in our lives, we drive too fast, we take drugs, we drink too much, we climb mountains, we go horse riding, we've slept with the wrong person, what ever...but we make it out the otherside and we carry on unscathed. Some people don't get that luxury.
There are no kid gloves here, only the story of people who gambled and lost, and the family they leave behind to pick up the pieces.

RIP to all of them.
Goodnight.

Ok Anonymous, admittedly its a waste of a life, poor family, so young etc etc, but should we all start snivelling and moping around because a model died? I think a bit of perspective is called for.

Some comments are in bad taste, but don't start berating people because they don't fall into your accepted moral standards.

I am amused at the seemingly heroic comments left by you 'anonymous' folk. Get off your soapboxes for a minute and really think this through. True: it is harsh to speak ill of the dead. But its also fake and pathetic to pretend {suddenly} that you like someone just because they have died under tragic circumstances. Her family do deserve our deepest sympathy and warmest condolences as does any family who have suffered a loss. I hasten to add that I doubt if her family would want her death glamourised if it was indeed as a result of drug taking. Undoubtedly Katy will be missed by those that knew and loved her. But let's face it - if her death is a result of cocaine use, we musn't forget that she was a 24 year old adult who had a choice and a chance to say "No thanks. I don't do drugs.". That would have made her a truly worthy rolemodel.

Reading the comments on the indo online this morning is nothing short of fucking pathetic, talking about legacies and that the whole Irish nation is mourning, and how kids are saying prayers at school!! WHAT THE FUCK?? ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? Did this girl solve world hunger, or win multiple oscars or grammies??
Really sad this girl died at a very young age, whatever the circumstances be it drugs or not, but how many tributes do we see to girls who die in car accidents, or are raped and murdered, all these might I add through no fault of their own!!!
And this girl is deemed a role model for kids, a girl who openly admitted to drug use etc!! Is Ireland that short of real celebrities that they have to glorify this???

I was reading all the rubbish on the Indo today and even on that bebo page that was set up in Katys memory they were mentioning that the some high profile beauty blog had been shut down because of bloggers comments about Katy. So I guess this was not true then?? Whatever happened to freedom of speeh.
Those papers like the Indo and the Hearld and all the other tabloid trash had no issues with publicising the bitchy texts between herself and her boyfriend during their high profile break- up. She used the media to become famous, and yeah it may have helped her career along the way but people had a very low opinion of her by the way she sought to publicise herself. I remember reading that interview she did with Barry Egan in the Indo and it was cringe reading ...so awful. I don't know why she did it. You have to in some way have respect for Glenda Gilson - at least the girl keeps her gob shut on her personal life.
Just listening to the news this evening the story just runs and runs and its amazing the amount crap people say, Rosanna Davidson said - "the nation is in shock" - I mean come on she was a young model not the president.
Its terrible what happened to Katy and she didn't deserve an exit like that, but its a real eye opener shit happens when you mess with drugs. As Richard Ashcroft sang "the drugs don't work they just make you worse" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4XCGeckA-E

I am in disbelief at the amount of attention that this story is getting, I truly am. It is a terrible tragedy that a young woman has lost her life, that I accept. However I am baffled as to why the Irish public give a rats arse:
- She is not a cleebrity by any stretch of the imagination.
- She was a "model" that did press calls on Grafton Street for 50 Euro an hour.
- She openly admitted to taking drugs, a great message for kids.
- She became "famous" for modeling lingerie on a table in a restaurant and having a tiff with her then bf.
- She never contributed anything to Ireland as a nation, except to voice her opinion on drugs, abortion and wearing too much fake tan.

So really, why do people care about her death, as I said, it is sad, but is Ireland that DESPERATE for some sort of...and it kills me to say it, but Z-list celebrity in their life's!!? I read an article in the Indo today about her jet-set lifestyle, limousines and parties....hahaahaa, please!!!! I also read how she was offered 10k to pose for playboy and she turned it down....the lady was a great story-teller to toot her own horn. As I said, sad that a young woman dies regardless of the circumstances, but lets not get carried away here, why should we care?

I couldnt agree more with you anonymous...don't understand the fixation with her either. It's not more than two weeks ago and people were giving out about Justine Delaney Wilson writing a book and making her tv series on how widespread cocaine is in Ireland. I guess cocaine is the popular thing to talk about these days. and from just looking at the tv ads Prime Time are going to do a special programme on Monday on how widespread cocaine is in Ireland. Whoopie I though JD Wilson already covered that one?? oh I forgot she destroyed all her interview evidence so what she told was a pack of lies. I guess I will have to watch it and see why their programme is so much more honest and truthful than hers. Who cares if the politicans take drugs they get away with fraud, and everything else what could possibly happend to a politican who snorts a line or two??

Sad for her, and her family and friends, that she died. I don't understand though people going on about how her alleged drug taking is a "bad message" for kids, or that she shouldn't have lived her life the way she did because of some "role model" status - she was a glamour model FFS!

Sit back and think for one moment, how fucked up has Ireland become.I feel really sad for her family, I can't imagine how they are dealing with this now. There are many murky area's within the world that KF lived in. The so called 'scene' in Ireland is false, dangerous and littered with tragedy waiting to happen. Sure it's probably nice to drive around in your new 911 or lambo, waltz past the monkeys on the doors of various night spots and have all of your personal intimate details displayed every weekend on the back page of a rag.

As someone who has personally used coke there's only one road it'll eventually lead to. The scum who called this girl their friend and yet probably supplied coke to her should just curl up and die. I know she had a choice and she took it, Im sorry for her and her family that it turned out this way. RIP Katy. Also the young lad in Waterford.

Aphrodite - how can you say Hosting365 displayed "total incompetence"? I don't know anyone in the company but I have read on a webmaster forum that beaut.ie was suspended because you went over your bandwidth allowance around the time the Indo printed that crap about beaut.ie being a Katy French hate site.

They also said you were repeatedly told to upgrade to a dedicated server because beaut.ie is so popular it affects the performance other sites on the shared server its hosted on. I don't know how tech savvy you are, but i'm sure H365 would have explained this to you when they phoned you to explain why the site was suspended.

Be very careful what you say on the web, calling a company totally incompetent - when apparently it was the beaut.ie owners who were the cause of the site getting suspended - can open you up to legal action.

Well said Joanne, I thought at first the circumstances around the suspension were a bit shady, why would H365 open themselves up to such bad press on a whim. I think beaut knew exactly the situation surrounding the bandwidth problem and chose not to pay for a dedicated server. After all how can you run an extremely successful website without understanding your server situation. I'm sure all this will come out in the end, but sadly H365's reputation has been tarnished by it.

How mature you all are. I dont really think those fighting for freedom of speech intended it to be used to allow stupid people make accusations like she deserved to die for wearing fur. The moderator here seems to think that hey should delete these posts on account of 'freedom of speech', ever heard of hate speech that is defamatory in nature well that contravenes freedom of speech legislation. But no doubt you will continue to leave posts up which are blatently offensive nonetheless.

Katy French's death was indeed tragic, she played with fire and unfortunately has paid the ultimate price. As one blogger said just because she died tragically doesn't mean we should pretend to like her now-true but you don't have to belittle her to make yourself feel better either.

People have also levelled the claim that if it was drugs it is her own fault, but shouldn't her friends who left her in bed and didn't call an ambulance share some blame too? Should society as a whole take some blame too? We have become a nation all too ready to accept the excessive highs of drug use without really thinking seriously about the consequences. It is tragic in this day and age that three young people should die in the one week so needlessly and so avoidably.
It is tragic, heartbreaking and despairing that our country has sunk to these depths.
It is perhaps equally though that Irish people aren't learing their lesson from it.

As one blogger said Katy has an extended family that may stumble across this at some point so if fatmammycat is too ignorant and irresponsible to understand meaning of freedom of speech please at least think before you post needless comments berating the girl for her choices. She has paid the ultimate price, let that be enough.

Imperial Rome went to the dogs when the establishment relied on Bread and Circuses to distract the people from serious issues.

When the Taoiseach of this country sends his Aide de Camp to represent him officially at the funeral of a citizen who on prima facie evidence died of drugs abuse (because that citizen was notionally more important than others who died in similar circumstances) then we know the country has gone to the dogs.

There's a trail of misery and death that leads to the nose of every cocaine user, including that of the late Katy French. As Sweary said, the peasant farmers of Colombia can thank the Katy Frenches of the world for their plight.

I have no doubt that the ethically challenged press will find another subject, of similar youth and beauty, for a similar concoction of pictures and gossip. And if this replacement model needs a snort or two to help her get through the day and read her press then so be it. Let's hope she dies happier than she lives.

Until then let us commiserate with Katy French's family, and with all who have to endure the misery of someone else's addiction.

I was disgusted to read the taoiseach's representative attended this funeral.

Who is Katy French? A model who did some charity work. A model who was also a cocaine addict, and worse still, an addict who lied and preached that she was clean.

What sort of message does this send out!

Was there any government representative at the funeral of the other young people who have died in the past few weeks from cocaine overdoses? I seriously doubt it!

"As one blogger said Katy has an extended family that may stumble across this at some point so if fatmammycat is too ignorant and irresponsible to understand meaning of freedom of speech please at least think before you post needless comments berating the girl for her choices. She has paid the ultimate price, let that be enough.'
Oh get off your soap box. If people want to leave a comment here and I let them that's my business. If you don't like it toodle off with yourself. Katy was a public figure, not everyone was smitten with her. Deal with it.

It definately is a tragedy, and condolences to her family. But as joanne indicated, no more a tragedy than any of the other coke related deaths recently. Is it just me or does anyone else feel tired of this story covering the fronts of papers for the last few weeks? It seems to me that it takes a truly uneventful nation to makes this a headline, daily, for this long.

Have you read John Waters piece? He was crying as he wrote it. I mean for fuck's sake, he didn't even know the girl.

Waters wet himself? Not for the first time, I suppose. What does he say, let me guess... she's a victim of Dublin 4, or anything other than her own emptiness?

Apparently it's your fault, mine too.

Observe.

“Katy’s death was the result not just of her foolishness, but of our collective helplessness . . . She did not, other than literally, die of whatever it will say on her death certificate. She died of desire, of being utterly human. . . Katy French was a personification of our fantasies, of our sense of what we were becoming, of how we might unfold ourselves.
I am crying, writing this. How can you cry for someone you’ve only once said hello to? Katy was the daughter of our dreams, in the sense that it was the dreams of her people that gave birth to what is tritely called her celebrity."

See?

Christ al-fucking-mighty! Is that in the Irish Times or does he now write for Sir Doctor AJF O'Reilly?

"..the dreams of her people"!!!

Dreams? Her people? Wet dreams of baldy old blokes in long black coats, maybe. Eejit.

Unreal isn't it. Between him and Myers I don't know which of them I"l fancy a crack at first.
People need to stop glorifying death too. Asleep, angels, 'called home' all this fucking twee terminology. There's nothing twee about dying young. Nothing to glorify either.

I agree. Phrases like 'worm food' are much more evocative.

I'm not saying we have to be overly harsh, but we definitely need to stop with pretending death is anything other than what it is, a life over.

Time for another "poem"?

Chop a line now. . .
Cocaine decisions . . .
You are a person with a snow-job
You got a fancy gotta go job
Where the cocaine decision that you make today
Will mean that millions somewhere else
Will do it your way
Cocaine decisions . . .
You are a person who is high class
You are a person not in my class
And the cocaine decision that you make today
Will mean nothing later on
When you get nose decay
I don't wanna know
'Bout the things that you pull
Outta your nose
Or where they goes
But if you are wasted
From the stuff you're stickin' in it
I get madder every day
'Cause what you do 'n' what you say
Affects my life in such a way
I learn to hate it every minute!
Cocaine decisions . . .
You are a doctor or a lawyer
You got an office with a foyer
And the cocaine decisions that you make today
Will not be discovered till it's over 'n' done
By the customers you hold at bay
Cocaine decisions . . .
You are a movie business guy
You got accountants who supply
The necessary figures
To determine when you fly
To Acapulco
Where all your friends go
Cocaine decisions . . .
We must watch the stuff you make
You have let us eat the cake
While your accountants tell you Yes Yes Yes
You make EXPENSIVE UGLINESS
(How do you do it? - let me guess . . .)
Cocaine decisions . . .
Cocaine decisions . . .
Cocaine decisions . . .

The fact that all this bleating about coke has driven people to write poetry about it is simply ghastly.

Both Charlie's Enormous Mouth and Cocaine Decisions were written by Frank Zappa in the 80's during a particularly bad decade of excess. For a musician who never used either alcohol or drugs he sure did nail the situation. What is ghastly is that idiots no matter how pretty they may be are still stupid enough to use coke. Does the list of famous od's not exist. Please get over the fact that a semi-famous person died of a drug overdose. Print a few shots of how she looked as her "friends" dumped her in the back of their car and maybe then the real glamour of the drug will be seen. The drive by shootings certainly haven't got the point across, and don't think for a minute that said shooters would think twice about wasting her if she fell behind on her payments. Oh I take that back, honour among thieves and all.

I am in fact mad at myself that I did not splurge on the YSL Wallet Outlet Croc Muse Two which has two colors that I admire with a sueced croc pattern.
