Allen Carr has died.

"An anti-smoking guru who has helped millions of smokers kick the habit has died from lung cancer died in his home near Malaga in Spain.
Allen Carr, 72, quit his 100-a-day habit 23 years ago, before going on to become a millionaire by advising people on how to stop smoking.

His books, about the Easyway method, have become international bestsellers and he ran clinics all over the world.

When he was diagnosed with the disease, Mr Carr said he saw his illness as a way to encourage more people to quit.

Talking at the time of his diagnosis, Mr Carr said: "Since I stopped smoking more than 23 years ago I have been the happiest man in the world. I still feel the same way."

Me too Mr Carr.
This man is the reason I don't smoke today. I went from a thirty a day habit to none overnight having read his Easyway for Women to stop smoking nearly four years ago. I never touched another cigarette since. I didn't even finish out the pack I had. Incredible, especially as I LIKED smoking-or so I told myself.
Sorry to see him go and I am eternally in his debt.
Go n'eiri an botháir leat.

I have to say he helped loads of people quit. I quit after reading his easyway (not for women, why isn't there one for men? Why do you get your own book?) too. Was off them for 8 months before I started again. Maybe it's time to dig the book out and read it again.

What made you go back on them after 8 months Gerry?

Alcohol, idiocy, stupidity. Take your pick. I'm back off them again now, but keep giving in to the deadly booze-stupidity combination and having to quit again the next day. I think I need to read the book again, as for those 8 months I just didn't want a cigarette.

That's how I am. After the first week-which wasn't even that bad- I just never felt the urge to smoke again. I never watch anyone else light up and go 'oooh' either. I just don't smoke. Actually it was his feeding the dragon analogy that affected me most. That's why I've never smoked even one. For some reason that image stayed with me more than anything else.
I can't explain it any better than to say everything he wrote made me go , 'ah, I see, right, so I'm to expect that, ah, right, really? Well that makes sense' and that was it. Off 'em.

Ah he was a good man so he was. Congratulations on the giving up of the cigs. Just in time to make all the others feel guilty now that the law is getting involved.

Is poor old Allen Carr dead?

I can't say I used his books to quit, but he probably helped to create a climate in which I believed it was possible.

The main thing preventing people from stopping is the belief that they won't be able.

I was like you - a total addict smoking 50 Rothmans a day, until the answer dawned on me: just don't do it! Allen Carr probably had something to do with that, and I thank him for it.

Yes, I too quit the Allen Carr way. I won't deny that I still have the occasional urge, but it passes.

Bock, that is pretty much it. If ya don't put the cigarette in yer mouth and light it, chances are ya won't smoke.
The great thing about him is he totally destroyed the myth that nicotine is so addictive, when in fact it really is not, just habits are. Like I said earlier, I will be indebted to him forever more.
RIP Mr Carr.

Aw now that's sad, I have his book am reading it at the moment for the 3rd time, yes it worked before, bothtimes, but then i gave it away to someone else to spread the word and when I needed it - or should have readit again - I didn't have it and slipped back, last time after over 18 months - grr!

He lived probably 25 years longer than he would have if he had not quit and he saved countless lives by helping other people free themselves.

RIP Allen Carr, you've left your mark.

Allen never said nicotine wasn't addictive. In fact, he said it is. Contrary to popular myth that it is just a bad habit. It is only addictive for three days though. And the withdrawal pangs feel just like hunger, but since they aren't hunger, food doesn't relieve them, so don't eat when you have them and you won't gain weight. They only last a few seconds. Once you get past those three days without a smoke, the rest is purely psychological, not addiction.
